The Hon. 11. D. Ball, Acting. Minister for Marine, informed a repoiter that ho had intended to make a statement on the Atnokura inquiry at the time when lie received the report, hut had now deiided to hold over his statement until the departure of ihe battleship New Zealand fiom Wellington. He would then hand a statement to the press for publication. The Minister added that he i^ight say in advance, that the charges of cruelty and of unduo severity oi punishment had been completely disproved. The local detachment of Mounted Rifles leave for Cambridge for the annual camp training on Monday. Twenty men who have been employed on the extension of the NelsouWest Coast railway from Gleuhope, 59 miles from Nelson, have been notified that the work is to be o losed down in a fortnight, The men have been offered employment at roadmaking. The comjriete stoppage of the work at Grlenhope has caused widespi'ead disappoinment, as people were bearing with the Government in a %'1 go slow " policy owing to financial stringency.
