VOTE OF CONFIDENCE.

Following the Premier's recent address in Helensville, the "other side of the question" was very ably put to a large audience at the Foresters' Hall last night, by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr W. F. Massey) assisted by Messrs Fisher, Harris, and Bradney, M's.P:

Mr Stewart introduced the speakers, while Mr Coates, Member for the district, extended a*^ welcome to them. - Mr Massey, in his speech, re* ferred to the bungling which had taken place over the recent £4,----000,000 loan, which, through short dated and floated during a period of financial depression, cost 5 per cent. He pointed out how impossible it was at the price to lend money to local bodies, etc., at a reasonable rate of interest. He also spoke on other matters which will be more fully reported in our next issne, and made touching reference to the late Mr Monk's services to the district.

Mr Fisher, M.P., referred to the manner money borrowed had been wasten on the WellingtonPetone duplication, Dunedin raik way station, political lines ,^j|l and said his party did not to borrowing, but to tnl^^^^l

Brief addresses in furtln^^^H oration of the Opposition p/ifflHlHr were delivered by Messrs Bradney and Harris, the former criticising the construction/and attitude of the present Cabinet, and the latter throwing out a straight indictment of the secrecy which had been maintained regarding loans in the pa^t.

The meeting was very interesting throughout, and the speakers were assailed by a number of questions which were welcomed and satisfactorily answered.

At the conclusion a motion byMr Wharton, thanking the speakers and declaring that Mr Massey and his colleagues were fit and proper persons to guide the destinies of the country, was passed amid cheers.

Mr Rea proposed an amendment "That a vote of thanks be., accorded Mr Massey and his coilergues for their addresses," but aeceived scant support.
