HELENSVILLE, TE PUA AND PARKHURST SPORTS.
The above athletic sports were held on the Show Grounds en Easter Monday, when there was a good attendance, including a number of visitors who arrived' by special trains. The weather although threatening in the morning turned out fine; and a very enjoyable and interesting afternoons sports eventuated, fthe different events being got off in good time. The ground committee had the ground marked out in splendid order, and the numerous competitors getting on their marks without much trouble, the first race, the Maiden, 120 yards, started shortly after 12 o'clock, being won by Lloyd Russell by about a yard. The next event the "Helensville Cup Handicap, fthe principle race of the day, in which there were 27 entries, mcluding'a string of visiting sprinters was run off in three heat?, the final being a great race between the p 7aced men, C. MoLeod by a great effort in the last 29 jards, beating Taylor by a foot, Cor by being a fool; behind, 3. The 440 and Half-mile handicaps were also good events, being won by narrow margins by W. Armstrong and F. H. Hart respectively. The Ladies' and Men's races were well contested, as also was the Fishermen's Race for a silver cup piesented by the Dominion Fish/ Auctioneering Company, (Messrs Langley and Bassett), which was won by W. Coleison. The Bicycle event was almost a farce, A. Becroft winning as he liked from the start. The local Race caused a deal of interest, and was wou by 0. McLeod who, on his previous running, should have had an easy task, but O, White, who was giving him a yard, pushed him at the finish. The 220 Yards Handicap was an interesting event, being the last of the handicaps, and the visiting runners who had hardly held Iheir own with the local contingent, made the most.of it, fighting the final out, Corby winning with Mills second and Branson third. The Relay Race, also went to the visitors, although Branson who had a long start of McLeod almost lost it by waiting and giving his opponent a sprint up the straight, There is no doubt about the capabilities of Y. O. Branson on the traok, while as a spor* tsinan he is a great acquisition at a country meeting, and we would have liked to see the scratch m.a.n take at least one pri^e,
The handicapping by Mr Burbush, as well carried out, although it was thought several local runners had been rather well treated ; the post entry handicaps were satisfactorily arranged by Messrs W. Eimnier and J, Dosvner. The Judges, Messrs W. Channon and J. Constable, the starter D. Donovan, and the large committee of workers, together with tho ever busy secretary, Mr J. Eea, deseive a wori of praise for the manner in whioh they carried, out their numerous duties, making the gathering a suocessful one.
The takings at the gste amounted to £25, and entrance foes £32, making a total receipts of £57.
The dance-in the evening w Tas also well attended, and was l^ept going until about 1 a,m, to in.usic supplied by Misses I4Ule a«d. Donovan.
