RATEPAYERS MEETING.
XO THB EDITOR.
Sir.—At the meeting hold on Monday 11th inst, to consider the i'own Board's proposal, etc., to carry out a drainage and water system for Helensville, some remarks made by me as to previous Boards inaction, in reference to these matters, seem to have been ■ constructed as a reflection on those past Boards; this was not my intention * at all. My references to past Boards ' were made with the idea of reminding those present that those previous .. Hoards had in some instances spent a good deal of time in considering these questions and had as a matter of fact acquired a great deal of preliminary = information, still thay •had 'never got any "forrardei\" The reason why as Mr McLeod explained wasbecause of the previous limited borrowing powers of ' those Boards,
There is however this fact to be borne- in mind, now that the position is altered, and that is that any Ta te» payers wanting information, should certamlyhave been present at Monday night's meeting, It cannot be said that tne Bbardih^s jiot afforded any ratepayer the o.p-psrtunity ,of acquirine such information. A o
The questions a rffised ,by Mr Laßoche at tho meeting" were to a very great extent qtiite~pertdrient^and • fair because there are always iwo sides at leasuSo anyquescion jvorth arguing. The great fact however, to bear in mind in reference to the whole scheme as placed before the meeting,", is that the various figures, etc., are prepared by a competent authority and must be regarded as a great deal mbre reliable ' than the ideas and figures of people ■who are not competent authorities I trust, Mr Editor, that on the data oi the proposed Poll, the ratepayers . will vote by a large majority for the water and drainage, system fox this town-and feel sure, that the township will take a new lease of life, and1 will progress-out of recognition mai- very '- few years from its inception. As to the: .years of, excessive costs, well -.'all the. world is J not much to a man if his wife is a widow" and the ' danger of this particular side of the question to us all will be very materially lessened whon the water and drainage systems are aa " accomplished fact in Helensville.
Yours Faithfully. Jos. Rea. 'i
