SUPPOSED SUICIDE AT BACK CREEK.
It was reported to Constable Hendrick at Rimu on Friday, by a miner named M'Cormick, living at Bac'.c Cieek, that Samuel Warning, a mate of his, had committed suicide in his hut by blowing himself to pieces with dynamite. The Times states that:—"The constable, accompanied by his informant, at once went to the but, and found one end of it apparently blown out, and the deceased lying on a .stretcher quite dead. On further examining the body, they found the whole of the right hand and the whole of the front part of the head missing, whilst the bed was covered with blood. Deceased was a mate in a sluicing claim with W. Stephenson and M. M'Cormick, and had been on the spree for the last few days. On Thursday night he left Gaylor's Hotel between 11 and half-past 11, and on the road home called in at Robert Ferguson's hut, where he remained drinking and talking until two in the morning. He was a single man, and 5G years of age. There is nothing to show at present whether the explosion was designed or an accident."
