He has a mark under his eye and is believed to have been connected with a certain vessel of which the name is given (Shah of Persia). The Chief Commissioner has wired here to have bis description verified. Sufficient information has not been obtained yet to make it certain whether it is Penn or not. Dunedin, October 6. The Presbytery have referred to the Synod a memorial from the First Free Church Congregation asking to 'be admitted into the Presbytery, provided safeguards are provided against instrumental music and other innovations. Presbytery express the opinion that no absolute safety can be provided by the higher courts of the church. brought before the Supreme Court tomorrow, when the Grand Jury will have the iudictments submitted to thetu. As many as 64 -witnesses came here by the same train. Arrived, at 11.20 a.m., Kaikoura, from Plymouth via the Cape, with the English mail, after a splendid passage of 39 days 7 hours 49 minutes including stoppages (1 day 5 hours 27 minutes), making her steaming time 38 days 2 hours 22 minutes. She brings 2500 tons of cargo for all ports, 274 bags of mails from Plymouth, ten bags from Capetown, and 300 passengers, all of whom have enjoyed excellent health. SOVEREIGN OE THE SEAS WRECK. Auckland, October 7. Penn's relatives are inclined to believe in his reported drowning. When the news was broken to Penn's father, he took it quietly. The South British Insurance Company have paid the insurance on the Sovereign of the Seas, believing that the policy covered the act of barratry committed by Caffrey. SUICIDE OF A MARLBOROUGH SETTLER. Blenheim, October 7. The Havelock correspondent of the Marlborough Times forwards the following particulars regarding a tragedy in the Pelorous Valley this morning:— " Mr Wilson started home from Havelock about eight o'elock last night, arriving at bis house about 4.30 this morning. Mrs Wilson, being anxious, had gone along the road to meet him. He passed her on the way, and soon after bis arrival told one of his sons to go after his mother; he called out goodbye to his children who were in bed, and went to the kitchen where he shot himself. Death roast have been instantaneous, as the charge entered his forehead, shattered the skull, and blew the brains all about the room. Deceased was a much respected settler and a member of the Pelorous Road Board. No cause is assigned for the deed. SUPREME COURT CRIMINAL SITTINGS. Wellington, October 6. At the Supreme Court to-day F. W. Carroll, with various aliases, on a charge of larceny, was acquitted. Alfred Waters was convicted of forgery and remanded for sentence. Auckland, October 6. Michael Lamray was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for the attempted murder of his wife. He was acquitted on the charge of shooting at her pai amour, George M'Guire. James Dodds, for attempted rape, three months and 25 lashes. Christchurch, October 6. At the Supreme Court to-day Frederick Percy Hunt was convicted of indecent assault apon a girl 8 years of age; sentence was deferred. George Brown, for unlawfully wounding, was sentenced to six months' hard labour; he had stabbed a young man with a pocketknife. James Castles, for violent assault, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour.
