Tbe Midland Railway Company cannot start work till the Company is registered in New Zealand. This has c.tused some delay, but Allan Scott, general manager, yesterday had an interview with the Minister of Public Works, and the Company will be registered in a day or two. Scott will then he able to treat direct with the Government, and the work can be commenced at once.

Timaru, September 14.

Thomas Hall and Miss Houston were brought up this afternoon at 2 o'clock. White, for the prosecution, asked for a remand. Perry and Hay, for the prisoners, opposed the application, but Beswick, R.M., granted the remand until Monday next, White undertaking to finish his case that day.

A woman named Sarah Keunet jumped off the outer end of the breakWater about 5.30 this evening. She was seen to throw herself off and a boat's crew from the Annie Bow put off and picked up the woman. On nrrival at thewhaif Dr. M'lntyre pronounced life to be extinct. Deceased was a single woman, a resident here for 18 years. An inquest will follow in due course.

The Mines Department lihs written refusing aid to introduce appliances for the successful treatment of refractory ores for gold and silver.

Mr H. Adams, Manager of the Wairongomai Battery, proceeds to Sun Francisco to inspect the new appliances in use at the Californian mines for gold and silver saving purposes, with a view to their introduction hero.

A resident of Wade, J. Barron, dropped dead to-day. It is stated that he had been drinking heavily.

In the seduction case Taylor v. Wolfe, plaintiff concluded his evidence. For the defendant two witnesses were called, which very strongly proved against him. Some sharp passages occurred between the counsel engaged in the case.

Later, 3.5. p.m. Judgment was given in the seduction case Taylor v. Wolfe.J for £75 damages and costs; damages payable within two days.
