The members of the party decided to strenuously oppose any scheme that might be proposed by the new Ministry, which offered a smaller measure of autonomy to Ireland than that offered by Mr Gladstone. At a meeting of Unionist Liberals it was agreed that whilst Unionists should do all in their power to preserve friendly relations with Mr Gladstone and his followers, they should maintain their separate organisation and also should support the new Government in resisting any demand that might be made for premature exposition of their policy with regard to Ireland. Mr Chamberlain formally intimated he would accept Lord Hartingtou as a leader.
