The team of ciicketers sent to England by the Melbourne Cricket Club commenced the season to-day at Sheffield Park, Sussex, by a match against a representative team chosen by Lord Sheffield. The match attracted great interest. There was a very attendance on the ground. The weather was unfavorable and the play was inteifered with by the heavy rain which fell at intervals dating the day, and made the wickets somewhat heavy. The members of the Australian team were entertained at luncheon by Lord Sheffield.

The following composed the Home team : —P. G. Grace (Gloucester), cap--Ler; P. Newham (Sussex), P. P. R ea d (Surrey), P. Barnes, (Notts), P. B.tes, (York), P. Flowers (Noit.s), H, Phillips (Sussex), P. Scot,ton (Notts), A. Shaw (Notts), A. Shrewsbury (Notts), G. IJlyett (York). The visitors won the

Total 98 (Received May 15, 9 p.m.) May 14. The match Australian Eleven veisus Lord Sheffield’s team was continued at Sheffield Park to day. The attendance was again very large, although the weather was showery during the day. Recent rains spoiled the wicket, and it was much cut during the day’s play. The home team went to the wickets for their first innings, and succeeded in making seven more than their opponents, viz 105, before all were disposed of. The Australian howling in this innings was very good, Garrett taking six wickets for two runs, while Spofforth took two wickets for five, and Palmer one wicket for three runs.

The; Australian team, who had scored 98 in their first innings, went in for their second innings, making 70 before they were pub out, Bonnor making the top score, 23, during a splendid innings in which he never gave a chance. Barnes and Ulyett were tlie most destructive bowlers on the English side, the former taking seven wickets for three runs while the latter took three wickets for two. The English team then went to the wickets for a second time, and when the stumps were drawn had placed 46 to their credit for the loss of two wickets. (Received May 17, 1.15 a.m.) May 15. The cricket match was resumed in Sheffield Park to-day. The Englishmen continued their first iniTings. Shrewsbury and Bates the not-out men of the previous evening, managed to put together the number of runs required to win, Shrewsbury carrying out his hat for 15, while Bates had 12 tohisciedit. The. English tea m thus won the match with eight wickets to spare. The semes were as follow ; Australian Eleven—first innings, 98 : second innings, 70; total, 168. Lord Sheffield’s team—first innings, 105; second innings, 64 (with eight wickets to spare) ; total, 169. The Prince of Wales has signified his intention of being present at the Au-itra linns v. Suirev match, which commences on the 20th inst, at the Kensington Oval.

Mr Wm. Beach, the New South Wales oarsman, has arrived from Australia.
