RESIGNATION OF CHAMBEBLAIN AND TREVELYAN. (Received March 17, 10.50 p.m.) London, March 17. A deputation of persons interested in the importation of Australian wines had an interview with Sir William Yernon-Harcourt to-day, when the subject of the duty upon colonial wines was entered upon. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, in reply to the deputation, said he was not at present prepared to take action in the matter, but he promised to give the subject careful consideration. It is understood Mr Chamberlain and Mr Trevelyan tendered their resignation in consequence of their objection to intrusting to an Irish Parliament the control of the land purchase fund. Mr Gladstone is endeavouring to induce both gentlemen to reconsider their decision. Arrived the P. and 0. steamship Valetta, from Melbourne January 28th. [ SPECIAL TO PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] London, March 12. Mr Gladstone is at present suffering from bronchial catarrh. The representatives of the German interests in Samoa intend shortly to interview Sir Dillon Bell respecting the purchase of such interests. Mr Henry Samuel, son of Sir Saul Samuel, has been gazetted a Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers. March 13. Baron Huddlestone, in delivering judgment in the libel action of Bryce v. Rusdeu, stated that Mr Rusden's statements were clearly libellous. His Lordship also commented severely on the evidence of Bishop Hadfield, of Wellington. The Times referred to the case, and considers that Mr Rusden's statements weie made in a very reckless manner. The creditors in the Commercial Bank of South Australia have lodged a petition praying that the affairs of the Bank may be wound up. March 14. It is reported that 12,000 Burmese are advancing on Mandalay, and British reinforcements have been ordered to that citv.
