Tin; Irish cattle dealers assert that they have successfully boycotted the Cork Steam Packet Company, which has paid its last dividend, and its collapse is considered certain. Advices received from the various counties of Ireland state that hundreds of Irish landlords are in the deepest distress, and some of the smaller landloidsare on the eve of starvation, owing to the fact that they have not received their rents for some time past. It is estimated that not as much as £SOO in rents have been paid in the agricultural districts since the beginning of November.
In an interview at Dublin on the 16th December, Mr Harrington said that 1600 National League branches, averaging 300 members had donated £12,000 to the executive of the League during the present year. He also said that some of the new Nationalist members of Parliament would receive salaries from the League. The extinction of the Liberals, he thought, would immensly benefit the Irish cause. Mr Harrington also said that boycotting was outside the Liberals’ programme and practice, and was confined to a few branches of the executive. He said he would stop boycotting whenever such power was misused.
William H. Vanderbilt of New York, died suddenly of paralysis of the brain, at his mansion, New York, on the night of December Btb. His total income per annum is stated to be 15,000,000 dols. The money and stock market will not be affected by his death. Vanderbilt’s death is attributed to overwork. Suspicious characters have been found hovering near his tomb, and it is believed the theft of the body is contemplated, as in the case of the millionaire Stewart.
The Loudon Times confirms the statement of the finding of a treaty between France and Burmah at Mandalay.
Bismarck was injured on the 13tb by falling off a horse. The Propaganda shows that in the vicinity of Cochin China, nine missionaries, seven native priests, 60 catechists, 270 members of religious orders, and 24,000 Christians were massacred ; 200 parishes, 17 orphan asylums, and 10 convents were destroyed, and 225 churches burnt.
