Christchurch, January 9. A young man named Donald, aged 17 years, was drowned on Wednesday, at the mouth of the Conway river, in the boat harbour, while bathing. The body has been recovered. January 10. Howard has been identified as having been seen at Sumner and Taylor’s Mis” take on December 16.
The bones of an infant were found in a garden at St. Alban’s last night. Abbott, occupier of the house, had only been in it a week, and found them a few inches below the ground in a box. Dunedin, January 9. Tracy and Roland, for robbing a Chinaman by means of a confidence trick, received two years each. At the Supreme Court, Chas. Anderson and Henry Cracknel! were found guilty of assaulting Alice Ledaine, and sentenced to three months. The jury after a short time acquitted Margaret Brown ou the charge of murdering her mother.
Wellington, January 9. A little girl, daughter of Mr A. Stewart, farmer, at Opaki, was killed yesterday. It appears that she was playing with some other children, and got on top of a large covered boiler which contained cold water. The lid turned over, and the girl fell in. She was immediately pulled out by an elder girl present, but had received such a shock to her nervous system that she died in about twelve hours.
Auckland, January 9. The steamship Mariposa arrived at 11 o’clock. She left ’Frisco on the 20th December, and was delayed by a gale between ’Frisco and Honolulu. She sailed from Honolulu on the 27th December, but experienced fierce squalls between Tutuila and Tonga. The New Zealand passengers are—L E. C. D. CoUington, F. W. Bridges (wife and child), H. Sears and wife, Owen H. H. Lusk, Wm. Upolo and La Manu, 15 steerage, and 14 saloon, and 48 steerage for Sydney.
MELANCHOLY BOAT ACCIDENT. Havelock, January 9. A melancholy boating accident happened here yesterday. Six boys, aged from 17 to 5 years, went out fishing. Whim returning home under sail the boat jibbed and capsized, throwing all the occupants into the water. With some difficulty all got hold of the boat, but were several times rolled off.
Aiter a time two of the boys, Charles and Heibert Rutherford, aged 12 and 11 respectively, disappeared and we e seen no more. There is little hope of recovering the bodies. The remaining four boys were rescued when almost exhausted by a passing boat. Charles Mathews, aged 13, appears to have saved his little brother aged 5, in a veiy commendable way in keeping him out of the water on his back until assistance arrived. In this he was assisted by Jas. Rutherford, brother of the lads drowned. The lads were in the water over an hour.
