[united I’lt ESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, January 8. The charge against Edward Shaw for misappropriation of a cheque was called on at the H.M. Comt this afternoon, when it was dismissed on the grounds that no specific instruction as to what was to be done with the cheque had been sent along with it. ( Mr Ebenezer Fox, Secretary to the Cabinet, died this morning. For a long time past his health has been very precarious. A visit to the Hot Lakes last summer set him ap a little, and he was able to resume his official duties, hut be quickly became again seriously ill, and left for the Lakes again. He was, however, unable to proceed farther than Napier, and after remaining there for some lime he returned to Wellington, looking a mere shadow to his former self, apparently suffering from some form of atrophy. Medical aid proved unavailing, and a day or two ago he left the Wellington Club, where he had resided for years, and became an inmate of the hospital, where ho died
this morning. Fox was about GO years of age. Christchurch, January 8. Howard has been identified as a man who, wearing goggles and a moustache, called at the hotel at Heathcote bridge on 16th December, the day when the severed hand was found at Taylor’s Mistake, and told the landlord of the circumstance. He was brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day and remanded to IBih January, Dunedin, January 8. Benjamin Rudd, a deferred payment settler, at Flagstaff, was charged to-day with attempted murder, A man named Waldie and another were riding past accused’s place and saluted him as “ Uncle Ben.” He threw stones at them and then rushed away for his gun, which he fired, wounding Waldie in the neck with a bullet.. Accused’s solicitor stated that prisoner had been annoyed for some time by people calling him “ Uncle Ben.” He only fired the gun with the intention of frightening them. Later. At the police Court Benjamin Rudd for shooting at John Waldie with intern to kill him, was committed for trial Bail was allowed, himself in £SO and two sureties of £25 each.
