VICTORIAN WHARF LABOURERS’ STRIKE! (Received January 8, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, January 8. The Union Company’s steamship Te Anau sailed this afternoon for New Zealand. Cardinal Moran is a passenger by her. A cablegram has been received by the Postmaster-General from the New Zealand Government in reply to his communication on the subject of the continuance of the cable subsidy, and the reduction of the tariff. The New Zealand Government, in its telegram, states its willingness to agree to similar terms to those proposed. In to day’s Produce Market, the only noticeable alterations in value are an advance of one penny per 561bs for maize, and a decline of fourpence per bushel for New Zealand oats. To-day’s quotations: New Zealand wheat, 3s 6d per bushel; New Zealand oats, 2s; maize, 561b5., 3s lid; sugar Company’s No. 1, £26 per ton. (Received January 9, 12.15 p.m.) Adelaide, January 9. The Produce Market remains dull. Shipping wheat is quoted at 4b Id to 4s 2d ; town flour. £9 to £9 5s ; country brands, £8 10s to £8 15s. (Received January 9, 1.30 p.m.) Melbourne, January 9. Mr Service has arranged to address his constituents at Oa.itlemaine on Wednesday next, and Mr Berry will meet the leaders of the liberal party on Thursday. It is expected some announcement will be made in regard to the impending changes in the Ministry, recently foreshadowed in the Argus. Forty-five wharf labourers have arrived from Adelaide to replace the stiikeis. The men have been placed on board Hnddarb, Parker, and Co.’s steamer Corangamito, in order to prevent intimidation from outside. The Trades Council has held a meeting at which a resolution was passed expressing sympathy with the Labourers Union; and the various trades unions are warmly supporting the action of the strikers. The returns of the Victorian goldffdd for ihe past year show a total of 810,000 ounces, being a small increase <m the yield of 1884.
