Wellington, December 14. A smart shock of earthquake was felt throughout Wellington yesterday morning. The direction was from north to south. The cable steamer Sherard Osborne, owing to the roughness of water in the Strait yesterday, was unable to do any work. She proceeds to the Strait again this evening. Proceedings are about to be taken against a well-known solicitor, under clause 74 of the Larceny Act. The charge is one of misappropriation of law costs entrusted to him for payment to another legal firm. The Government have requested Mr Joseph Clarke, of Sydney, brother to Sir William Clarke, to represent New Zealand at the funeral of the Jate Major-General Scratchley. Sir Julius and Lady Vcgel returned to Wellington this morning. During the passage from Lyttelton Sir Julius suffered severely from a pain in his side and back, and Dr. France, who was sent for on the arrival of the Hinemoa, forbade his removal from the steamer until this afternoon. The body of Israel Bassendale, who was drowned in the Waipori river, Master ton, has been recovered. It is reported here that Mr Alexander Hirschberg, farmer, Taratahi, is missing. He has not been seen for some time, and his friends are anxious.
Nelson, December 14. The governors of the Nelson College have appointed Miss R. M. Will, < f Christchurch, and Mrs Snell, of Auckland, as assistant mistresses at the Girls' College. Invercargill, December 14. The cutter Kent, when crossing Foveaux Strait, from Stewart Island to Bluff on Saturday, was thrown on her beam ends and narrowly escaped being capsized. The crew w<»re at first puzzled to account for the occunence, bnt the mystery was explained by the appearance of a large whales astern of the vessel. It is surmised that the cutter sailed over the monster. An old man known as Daddy M'Lean was found lying dead on the jetty this morning. He was seen fishing at 3.30 a.m., and was foutd dead a few hours later. His death is supposed to be from natural causes. Deceased, who had lived here many years, was nearly 90 years of age. At the inquest on Gilbert Jenkings, whose body was discovered in Pnni Creek on Saturday, the evidence showed that deceased had been suffering from delirium tremens. A verdict of found drowned was returned. Dunedin, December 14. The Star states Mr Macandrew is to be called to the Upper House immediately. A six-roomed house in South Dunedin was burned down this morning. The insurance is £350 in the Equitable. ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, December 13. Arrived, s.s. Alameda, from San Francisco at 1.30 p.m., with the English mail. She brings 60 passengers and 1200 tons cargo. She left San Francisco at 4.10 p.m. on the 23rd November, arrived at Honolulu on November 30th, at 5.30 a.m.; left at 9.27 a.m., after a detention of 28 hours. The Zealandia sailed from San Francisco on November 23 at 2 p.rn , and arrived at Honolulu on November 30 at 1 p.m.; sailed December 1 at 1.30 p.m. The. Alameda sails for Sydney shortly after midnight. The Alameda has undergone extensive alterations and improvements to fit her for the route. There is no sign of the Zealandia. ' The Penguin, for the south with the southern 'Frisco mail, leaves Onehunga at six o'clock. She cannot cross the Manakau bar till 4 o'clock in the morning.
