BOROUGH COUNCIL,

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borouyh Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Fitzsirnons, Kroener, Olden, Malouey, Ziegler, and Mulvihill. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of, and the inward read and received. A memorandum was read from J. Sperrey, Esq., Property Tax Commissioner, as follows:—"TotheTowu Clerk, Kumara.—lie your application for rates on Crown lands, I forward herewith form of demand, which please fill in (giving full description of lands rated), and return to me, together with copies of resolutions passed by the Council in levying the rates."—The Town Clerk was instructed to forward the information. A letter was read from Mr James Home, dated 9th inst., as follows: "To bis Worship the Mayor and Councillors for the Borough of Kumara.— Sir and Gentlemen.—l am agreeable to allow your Council to convey water for your Tank in Main street, through my garden, at a rental of £3 per annum. This offer to be without prejudice to my light of increasing this amount, or refusing altogether should you decide on not accepting ray offer at the present time."—The Council resolved that the claim conld not be entertained. The Finance Committee's Report was read and received, and accounts amounting to £G2 7s Sd passed for payment. A Report from the Inspector of Nuisances was read and received. His Worship the Mayor at this stage vacated his seat, and Cr Anderson took the chair. In accordance with notice of motion given at the previous meeting of the Council, Cr. Olden moved—" That tin's Council do now take into consideration the advisability of fixing a salary f->r the Mayor for the ensuing year, and (hat the amount be fifty pounds pec a.mum for the pre.se.it year." He considered that Mr Burger, who had fillecl

the office during the past year and had now been re-elected, was justly entitled to it. The Council would have been placed in a peculiar position if he had not come forward this time' for re-elec-tion, no one else having done so. There was a certain amonntj of loss in time and expense attached to the office, which, if one did his duty, as it must be admitted the present Mayor had done, ought to be recouped or made up in some way. Cr. Mulvihill seconded the motion. Although he was opposed to this vote previously, he now thought the present Mayor having come forward for reelection, and been elected without opposition, showed that his services had been appreciated by the public. Cr. Ziegler would support the motion. He considered the Mayor present and elect deserved it. He (the Mayor) was never backward in giving or doing auything, and was always ready in any good work. Cr. Maloney said he entered the Council on the no salary to Mayor ticket, and he intended so to go out of it. He was, however, aware that there were expenses attached to the office which could not well be avoided. He would therefore move an amendment, "That the word ' fifty ' be struck out, and the words 'twenty-five' inserted in lieu thereof." There was no seconder to the amendment, and on the motion being put, the Chairman declared it carried. Cr. Maloney called for a division, which resulted as follows -.—Ayes, 7 Crs. Anderson, Fitzsimons, Kroener, Kiileen, Mulvihill, Ziegler, Olden. Noes, I—Cr.1 —Cr. Maloney; The motion was therefore carried. This concluded the business of the meeting.
