in reply to a question, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated that Government knew no reason why Sir Henry Drnmmond Wolfe should not proceed to Egypt on_ a special mission, as arranged. He dedenied that the presence of Sir Henry would be distasteful to the Khedive. The National Bank of New Zealand published the half-yearly returns yesterday. The directors leport that they are not in a position to declare a dividend. A surplus of £BOOO for transactions of the period will be carried forward and placed to reserve. In the House of Commons last night Sir Michael Hicks-Beach announced to the House the programme of legislation brought down by the Government which includes among other things, a measure for facilitating Federation of various parts of the Empire. Mr Gladstone spoke, and announced that the Opposition acquiesced in the proposals of Government. An early close of the session is looked forward to.
