KUMARA HOSPITAL.

After the conclusion of the business for which the adjourned meeting of the Hospital Committee had been called, the business of the ordinary fortnightly meeting was proceeded with ; presentMr Rudkin (in the chair), Messrs Voysey, Hannah, Wildridge, Ziegler, Watson, Wooldridge, Burger, and Hope. The minutes of the previous ordinary and adjourned meetiugs were read. Mr Burger moved that before the same be confirmed, the resolution passed at the ordinary meeting of the sth May, declaring Messrs Hannan and Garguilo's seats on the Committee as vacant, be expunged from the minutes. The motion was agreed to and the minutes then confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. The inward correspondence was read and received, and considered. A letter from Mr L. Bruck, Sydney, in reference to inability to procure certain drugs, was referred to the House Committee. In reference to the resolution to inquire from the Premier the probable cost of maintaining the patient Carlstroni at Rotorua, the Secretary reported having received the following telegram in reply thereto. "To R. E. Wylde, Esq., Secretary Kumara Hospital, Kumara. "The Hon. the Premier has directed me to inform you, in reply to letter of Qthinst. that Carlstrom will be received into the Government Hospital at Rotorua if thirty shillings a week is paid for his maintenance. "Please let me know when patient leaves, so that instructions may be sent " H. J. H. Eliott. "Wellington, May 14, 1885." The telegram was received and its consideration held over till next meeting, the matter of expense being now in private hands. Letters and telegrams betweeu Messrs Jones and Menteath, solicitors, Greymouth, and the Secretary (Mr R. E. Wylde) were read. They were to the effect that Messrs Jones and Menteath having heard that Mr Puikiss, solicitor, Hokitika, had been retained for Dr. Monckton in his supposed intended action against the Hospital Committee or certain members thereof; they had wired to Dr. Monckton that he could not expect them to stand oat of the case for a guinea j to, which they

had received a reply releasing them from the retainer; whereupon, as telegraphed, they were prepared to act for you (the letter being addressed to Mr R. E. Wylde, as Seeretary Kumara Hospital Committee), and they (Messrs Jones and Menteath) were now absolutely freed from any obligation to Dr. Monckton. Mr J. E. Warner, Solicitor, Greymouth, having in the meantime been written to and replied, the letter and telegrams from Messrs Jones and Menteath were simply acknowledged as received. Mr Wildridge was elected on the House Committee vice Mr Wooldridge retired. A letter was read from Mr Thomas Oliver, stating that there was a balance of £8 lis 6d due to him for extras in connection with building the new addition to the Hospital, and that as the work had been done about two years; he intended taking legal proceedings unless he got an immediate .settlement. Considerable discussion ensued, ar.d eventually on the motion of Mr Hope seconded by Mr Wooldridge, it was resolved that the sum of £6 4s be paid to Mr Oliver, on condition that he give a full receipt for all money owing to him by the Committee, as the architect (Mr Campbell) had declined to allow that he was entitled to more. The House Committee reported that they had had the oven built in; that some sheets and pillow-cases were required ; and that the Hospital was in a satisfactory condition, the patients seeming well contented. Also, as regards painting the building that Mr Thompson had estimated the material at £5 9s, and time at three weeks; that he was willing to undertake the work at £3 per week, 30s to be paid in cash, and the rest to be deducted from the cost of his maintenance. This concluded the business of the ordinary meetiug. With regard to the painting of the Hospital, it was resolved that tenders be called for the same by advertisement in the Kumara Times. Accounts to the amount of £7 4s £6 4s to Oliver, and £1 for hire of l Theatre for Premier's lecture in February last, were then passed for payment.
