[united press association.] I Wellington, May 20. Colonel Whitmore has just concluded a contract on behalf of the Government with Captain Whitney, for the manufacture here of half-a-million rounds of Muntz metal Snider ball ammunition. The price is but a slight advance on the imported article. Captain Whitney has men in his employ acquainted with the manufacture of cartridges, and it is understood that the powder is to be obtained from Dunedin. Colonel Whitmore expects to be here till after the Queen's Birthday. His Excellency the Governor has granted 12 months' leave of absence to the Hon. Y/m. Robinson from attendance as a member of the Legislative Council. It is understood that the police in Wellington are about to institute proceedings under the Gaming and Lotteries Act against the promoters of racing sweeps and consultations. The writ for the election of a member to represent the Southern Maori Electoral District in the House of Representatives, vacant owing to Mr Taiaroa being called to the Legislative Council, has been issued. Nominations are to be made at Kaiapoi on 3rd April, and the polling is.to take place at the several polling places on June 10. The writ is returnable by 12th June. Christchurch, May 20. Mrs C. J. Champion, a much respected lady resident of Kaiapoi, died very suddenly from apoplexy this morning. The shoemakers strike here was finally settled to-day. Messrs Lightband, Allan, and Co., the only wholesale firm who have resisted the demands of the men till now, agreed this afternoon to practically accept the revised statement of wages submitted by the men, who will resume work to-morrow. Dunbdin, May 20. Jacob Shustes is reported missing from Kaitangata. He had been drinking, and it is believed that he fell or threw himself into the river. The son of Captain Sinclair, of the Plucky, was severely injured on board the Te Anau by beiug struck by a block of wood he was carrying, caused by his foot slipping. He is in a very precarious state.
