THE MAHDI’S POLICY.
A proclamation was published lately, addressed by the Mahdi to the inhabitants of Arabia, promising the speedy re-establishment of the Caliphate in Medina. According to the Nusret it contained the following passage :—“ I swear by God and the Prophet that I do not wield the sword to found for myself a kingdom on earth, or to amass wealth, or to reside in splendid palaces, but to bring comfort and relief to all believers, and free them from the slavery imposed upon them by unbelievers, as also to restore to the Moslem faith its old glory. I am therefore determined to carry my sword from Khartoum to Berber, and thence to Dongola, Cairo, and Alexandria, and to restore these cities to Moslem rule. From Egypt I will proceed to the land of the Prophet, and drive out the Turks, whose reign is not better than that of unbelievers, and restore its two holy cities to the sons of Ismael. Believe, therefore, 0 sons of Ismael, that I shall soon appear in your midst armed with the sword of faith.”
