Christchurch, May 14. At the inquest on the infant boy Briggs, who died from the effects of burning, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The mother, when admonished by the coroner on her negligence in going out and leaving the children with a fire burning in the grate, was deeply affected, and said “ I know all that now, but it is too late.” All the Hon. W. Robinson’s horses were scratched for the New Zealand Cup to-day.
Dunedin, May 14. At the Phoenix mine, at Skippers, Joseph and James Mitchell, father and son, were killed while taking out quartz. It is presumed that the accident was caused by the ground being loosened by dynamite charges. The Women’s Temperance Union have resolved to petition against the employment of females as barmaids in public houses.
Auckland, May 14. Leigh Kissling, aged 13, son of T. Kissling, registrar of deaths, while out
shooting on Tamaki river with another boy, was accidentally shot in the head. Death was instantaneous.
