FATAL ACCIDENT.
A fatal occurrence, no doubt the result of accident, occurred on Tuesday last near the Black water-Greenstone Creeks bridges, known as the junction of the Marsden-Greenstone and Kumara roads. Alexander Angus, who bad recently taken up a claim near the Blnckwater Creek bridge, left his home at Greenstone early on Tuesday morning, promising bis sister-in-law, Mrs Angus, to be home at about three o’clock in the afternoon. Not returning that day, a search was instituted yesterday morning, and not far from the scene of his labours Angus’s hat was found on the shingle on the bank of the Blackwater Creek. An examination of the locality led to the belief that Angus, in passing along a very narrow bank of shingle about fifteen feet above the water, had slipped and fallen into a deep hole below in the creek. The hole was then dragged, with the result that Angus’s body was brought to the surface, and afterwards also a pick which he is supposed to have had in his hand at the time he slipped. The body was taken to Greenstone last evening; and an inquest was held this afternoon before J. O’Hagan, Esq., J.P. and Co roner, and a verdict of “Accidental death ” returned.
