Latest news from Afghanistan is to the effect that the Russians have advanced fully twenty miles further from Penjdeh south towards Herat, and have occupied Merutchak, a town on the east bank of the Murghab River. This news is confirmed by a despatch received at the London Foreign Office from Sir Peter Lumsden.
The Miners Ball Committee will meet at Stewart’s Hotel, Seddon street, on Saturday evening next, at half-past six o’clock.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council will be held this evening. The “Bosphore Egyptienne” difficulty has been amicably settled by Nubar Pasha tendering an apology to France for its suppression; and the paper is now republishing. The usual practice meeting of the Fire Brigade took place last evening, during which the following team were elected to represent Kumara in the triangular match with Hokitika and Greymouth ;—Brayshaw, Schulstad, Smith, M'Ewan, Greenwood, M‘Mahon, Anderson, Ooutts; J. Hannah, emergency. The original quadrille assembly that used to meet at the Public Hall, Dillmaji’s last season, will re-open there to-morrow evening at eight o’clock. Persons wishing to become members are requested to attend sharp at 8 p.m.
By appointment of the Presbytery of Westland, the Rev. B. J. Westbrooke, of Greymouth, is announced to preach in the St. Andrew’s Church, Third street, next Sunday morning and evening, and at Stafford Presbyterian Church in the afternoon.
A full share in Price and party’s sixacre claim, at Larrikins, is for sale by tender. Applications will be received by Mr D. Hannan, Mining Agent, not later than 7 p.m., on Thursday, 7th May.
The inquiry into thej cause of the stranding of the Anchor Line steamer Wallace when entering the Hokitika river on Sunday, the 19th insi, was concluded yesterday. The Court exonerated the master and officers of the steamer, while it did not endorse the view which Captain Bruce entertained that he was put ashore through an error of the harbormaster. The Wallace was floated off on last Tuesday morning’s tide, and is expected to sail north to-day. The demand for the great American remedy, Hop Bitters, in this part of the world has become so great that the Hop Bittsrs Co., whose head-quarters are at Rochester, New York, U. S. A., have been compelled to open a laboratory in Melbourne. It is in charge of Mr M. H. Yan Bergh, a gentleman of several yeaps’ experience with this Company, and the trade may be assured of receiving goods equal to the parent house, and the most courteous treatment. The H. B. Co. have establishments at London, Paris, Antwerp, Belgium, Breda, Holland and Toronto, and their American Bitters are probably the best known medicine in the world.
