Australia commenced to-day on the Association Ground. The weather was splendid, and there was a very large attendance of spectators. The ground was in first-rate order, and the wicket excellent. The Englishmen went in first, and their innings closed for a total of 269, the highest individual scorers bein" Shrewsbury, bowled 40 ; Barne?, bowled, 50 ; Bates, caught and bowled, 64; Maurice Read, bowled, 47; Flowers, bowled, 14; Peel, not out, 17. At the close of the day’s play the Australians had scored 12 runs, with one wicket down.
