A verdict for defendants has been given in the libel action brought by John M'Elhone, M.P., against the proprietors of the Evening News newspaper. (Received March 16, 1 p.m.) Melbourne, March 16. The Age to-day states that information has reached the police which necessitates immediate precautions for the safety of Government House, the powder magazine, and other buildings. A. mounted guard of six has been placed at Footscray powder factory, and a picket-guard at the Government House. (Received March 16, 1.50 p.m.) Latest. The Merchant Shipping and Underwriter’s Association are in receipt of a telegram from London, dated Saturday, stating that no war premium is yet being charged to Australia. Arrived, the P, and O. steamship Pekin, with the English mails to 6th February. Hobart, March 16. Shaw Saville, and Albion Company’s steamship Tainui, from Plymouth February Ist, arrived here on Saturday morning, en route to Port Chalmers.
