[united press association.] Dunedin, February 11. His Excellency the Governor opened the new boys' high school to-day. There was an imposing ceremony. Amongst the speakers were the Rev. Dr. Stuart, Mr Macandrew, M.H.R., and Dr. MacDonald, the rector. In acknowledging the vote of thanks, his Excellency referred in feeling terms to the death of General Gordon. Gordon had been a personal friend of his, he said, and a more pure, generous, nobleminded man than Gordon never lived ; he was a pattern to the rising generation. His Excellency leaves for Christchurch to-morrow morning. ILLICIT DISTILLATION. Hawera, February 11. The illicit distillation cases were partly heard to-day. Anderson and Smith, the makers, were each convicted on two informations. Burke, the brewer, charged with conveying whisky, was convicted on two informations. There are more cases to come on tomorrow, and meantime no sentences will be pronounced. February 12. George Moss, hotelkeeper, was convicted of supplying the material used in the manufacture of illicit whisky. Sentence is deferred until the other cases are disposed of. Later. Th illicit distillation cases were concluded to-night. The sentences are as follow:—Jno. Anderson, and Peter Smith, makers of whisky, six months; Geo. Moss, hotelkeeper, Woodville, supplying material to work the still, fined £200; Burke, brewer, Haweraj for carryiug whisky, fined £200; Thos. Lloyd, hotel-keeper, Hawera, having whisky in his possession, fined £SO. All the fines were paid.
