Souakim, February 3. A force consisting of eighty British Husssra and some Egyptian troops, which were despatched hence to Handaub to burn it down, had effected their purpose and were returning to Souakim when they were surrounded by a large body of rebels. Heavy fighting ensued, but tlie Hnssars and Egpytians succeeded in effecting their escape, with eight killed, five of whom were Hussars.

Captain Viscount St. Vincent, who was wouuded at the battle of Abukela Wells, has died from his wounds.

Abundant forage has been obtained at Gubak.

Misri Pasha, who has arrived at Gubak from Khartoum has arranged to proceed with Lord Wolseley to rescue General Gordon.

During the engagement near El Metemneh, the enemy were never nearer the British than thirty yards.

Seven thousand of the rebels took part in the engagement, and lost 1300 killed and wounded. The English loss was twenty killed and sixty wounded. El Metemneh was attacked by the the British on the 21st. The British lost nine men and then withdrew. Sir Charles Wilson has bombarded Shendy.

January 30. The Mahdi has been strongly reinforced, and is still in the neighborhood of El Metemneh.

Colonel Stewart who was wounded at the recent engagement at El Metemneh, is recovering.
