WESTLAND DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board met at the County Council Chambers, Hokitika, on Friday last at 7.30 p.m,; present—The Chairman (R. J. Seddon, Esq.), Messrs M‘Whirter, Rae, Reid, and Dale. The following particulars of business relating to this part of the district is taken from the West Coast Times : Letters from the managers of the Banks of New Zealand, New South Wales, Union Bank of Australia, and National Bank of New Zealand, Limited, in answer to letters from the Board respecting its banking account.— Received. Telegram from E. T. Robinson, Greymouth respecting books, &c. Resolved—that Mr Robinson be requested to forward this Board’s share of books and furniture as soon as possible. Telegram from Dr. Hislop, informing the Board that their secretary is empowered to frank letters and telegrams under the old authority as Secretary to the Westland Board.—Received. Memorandum from Dr. Giles, drawing attention of the Board to section 3 of the Hokitika High School Act. , Resolved—that H. R. Rae, Esq., be nominated to a seat on the Hokitika High School Board. Letter from Dr. Hislop, forwarding a petition from the parents (Native and European) resident on the north bank of the Arahura river, and also a translation of a letter from Ihaia Tainui, relative to the. re-opening of the Native school at Arahura. Resolved—That the Minister of Education be informed that the Board would prefer the Native school at Arahura being re-opened, this step being most suitable for the various residents in the vicinity. The Secretary then read the list of nominations received for the scholarship examination, consisting of the following :--F. Banks, John Goulston, Alfred James Hoskins, Jane Seddon, W. J. Cran, Arthur Howe, Frederick Mueller, Earl Gibson, George Perry, Camile Malfroy, David Wilson, Henry Nightingale, Marion Jack, Annie Banks, Edith Gibson, Rose Holmes, Joseph Lockington and Thomas Traversi. Resolved—That the Inspector prepare the papers. That the examination be held in Hokitika, and that R. C. Reid, Esq., Dr. Giles, and H. R. Rae, Esq., be, requested to act with the Inspector in conducting the examinations. That the examination be held on January 22 and and that the candidates

nominated, if eligible under the Board’s regulations, be admitted to compete. The report of the committee appointed to confer with the various bank managers was then read, and it was resolved that the report be adopted and that the Board’s accounts be kept at the Bank of New Zealand. At this stage of the proceedings Mr Jack entered and Look bis seat. The report of the Finance Committee respecting the proposed alterations in the regulations for allotting staff, payment of teachers and grants to committees was read and received. The Board then went through the proposed alterations and additions seriatim and, after much discussion, and some amendments on the proposal to pay committees 50 per cent more than had been paid by Government during the past year. Mr M‘Whirter moved and Mr Dale seconded an amendment that the full amount under the old regulations should be paid. The Board divided. Ayes—M‘Whirter, Jack, Dale. Noes—Rae, Reid, and the Chairman. The Chairman gave his casting vote with the nocs, and declared the amendment lost. Resolved—That the Regulations for the allotment of staffs, the payment of teachers’ salaries, grants to committees and payment to junior pupil teachers as amended, be adopted and printed. Resolved—That the secretary be instructed to write to all the teachers notifying them them that the Board will (subject to their consent) pay the salaries for January at the rate paid by Government for the month of December, pending permanent engagements under the Board. Resolved—That copies of the new regulations be forwarded to the teachers and committees. That the committees be asked to nominate, and the teachers to notify their acceptance of employment under the Board’s regulations. Resolved—that the committees of schools losing the services of junior assistants be informed that the Board will not make any provision for their salaries after February 28. Letters from the Arahura Eoad, Blue Spur, and Gillespie’s Schools were received. Resolved—That the following appointments be made:—Mr Kelsey to be teacher of the Arahura Road School, Mr Andrews to he teacher of the Blue Spur School, and Mr Voysey to be teacher of the Gillespie’s Beach School, all subject to the new regulations. Resolved—That Mr Jack be treasurer to the Board. Resolved that the election of the two new members of the Board be fixed for March 11th. at 11 o’clock in the forenoon. Resolved—That certificates of birth be produced by all candidates prior to admission to the scholarship examination. The Board then adjourned at 12.30 a.m. until Tuesday, February 10th, at 7.30 p.m.
