[united press association.] Wellington, January 19. A young man named Brooke, son of the Inspector of Permanent Way, Wellington and Masterton railway, was drowned in the Hutt river yesterday. He was bathing in the river when he was suddenly seized with cramp. Nelson, January 17. A most severe thunderstorm passed over Nelson this afternoon. Forked and zigzag lightning was alnost incessant for nearly two hours, the flashes being visible. At the same time a strong wind with heavy rain, and hailstones as large as marbles fell in places. It is feared that much damage has been done to the crops, which are very heavy this season. Dunedin, January 18. A three-mile race between Livingstone the long distance professional, and Fosse from Christchurch, came off at the Caledonian grounds last night. Fosse got 150 yards start. Livingstone overtook him when two and a-half miles were gone, and won easily.
