UNITED FIRE BRIGADES' DEMONSTRATION.

The United Fire Brigades' Demonstration takes place at the Caledonian Society's Grounds, Dunedin, on Wednesday, the 28th inst, It is under the patronage of a large number of influential gentlemen of Otago including the Hon. R. Stout, Premier, the Mayors of Dnnedin, Pott Chalmers, South Dunedin, &c, the President of the Caledonian Society, and a large-committee. A large number of brigades of the colony will be represented, the names of which were published some days ago in our telegrams. Kumara is probably the youngest of the brigades who sends a team. The names of the team are as follow : Branch man Brayshaw (Captain) ~ Schulstad Fireman Smith ~ Anderson „ Ziegler „ Baruett, emergency and delegate. By some it is thought premature to have sent them to compete with men who have had many years' experience in competitions; and perhaps it would have been better if our local men had tried their ability first against Hokitika, or Greymouth, or both, before expending so much of their funds to compete at such a distance with practiced competitors. However, their fares to and fro are paid by the Government, and their absolute expenses are paid out of their own (members') fund, so that it is not directly ;.t the public expense, as some have supposed, that they are gone to compete. The team is not ao strong as it was at first expected, two very smart men, Lieut. M'Ewfiii and Fireman Greenwood, find." in-,* it impiMctic-il.le to spare the time required. they will be sure to acquire some useful hints in practice amongst so many experienced firemen. There are prizes for hose, engine, hose and ladder, hydrant, aud curricle engine practices, alarm and rush, 200 yards flat race, tug of war, a special prize ; as well as scratch competitions which will be arranged on the ground. The Kuomim team have our heartiest wishes for their success.
