[REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. < START OF THE ARMY MARCH ACROSS THE DESERT. SUSSEX REGIMENT TO HOLD THE WELLS. (Received January 10, 1.25 a.m.) Cairo, January 8. Latest telegrams from Korti state that Colonel Sir H. Stewart started today for Gakdul, with the 19th Hussars, a Camel Corps, the Sussex Regiment and the Naval Brigade. At Gakdul the Sussex Regiment will remain to hold the position and protect the wells. The Guards, who are now at Gakdul, will then join the other troops under Colonel Stewart, and his force will proceed to El Metemneh, as previously arranged. [special to press association.] Korti, January 4. The troops under Colonel Sir Herbert Stewart reached Gakdul unopposed early on Friday, and the wells there are now held by the Guards. London, January 7. The march on Gakdul by the troops, was a complete surprise to the inhabitants.
Three thousand Arabs are now en trenched at Metmel.
