Rumours which have gained credence here are to the effect that a Conference of the Powers on the Egyptian question is about to take place at Paris. (Received January 3, 12.30 p.m.) Evening. In connection wiih the recent assumption by Great Britain of the ownership of the district of St. Lucia, East Africa, it is now announced that Luderitz, of Bremen, claims that their representatives acquired St. Lncia from the Zulu King, Diniznhi, in November last.

The German Press display an angry tone with regard to the annexation of St. Lucia by the British, the only ground for which was the purchase by a traveller of 100,000 acres of laud there. In consequence of the bad state of the market, the issuing of the New Zealand loan will probably be deferred, and the amount reduced to a million. The business of the uew Oriental Bank is in a prosperous condition, the deposits already amounting to £200,000. The English Government will annex the Louisiade Archipelago, at the south-eastorn extremity of New Guinea. A. British Syndicate is projecting a Company with a capital of five millions for the construction of cruisers. The Foreign Press admit the truth of the assertion that Prince Bismarck was intriguing for the downfall of Gladstone. It is expected that Germany will annex Samoa and Tonga. France is willing to exchange the Island of Rapa for the New Hebrides group. December 30. The French Chambers and Senate have been prorogued. The English Government have determined to abandon all claim to the island of Raiatea. December 31. The French troops in Tonquin have done some successful fighting recently.
