DEPARTURE OF H. A. STRATFORD, ESQ., KM. STRANDING OF THE S.S. STAR OF THE SOUTH. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Greyjioutii, December 22, 2.10 p.m. H. A. Stratford, Esq., R.M., leaves for Otago this afternoon. He was presented with an illuminated address by citizens and friends on Saturday. This morning the legal fraternity also presented him with a complimentary address, and the speeches on the occasion were mutually laudatory. 2.20 p.m. The s.s. Star of the South attempted to come in over the bar when the river is in high flood, running eight knots at least. She got over the bar, but on entering the river was caught by the current, and swung right round. The captain got up sail and endeavoured to extricate himself from the difficulty by making another attempt to get up the river but was unable to make any headway. She is now touching the stonework, with her bow just at the entrance, rising and falling with the swell, and striking each time; but apparently without any damage. Her sails are set and steam is up. The crowd ashore have passed two spars on board and a .man from shore is passing the children off; there appear to be six or seven. There are other passengers. A great crowd has collected, but no excitement, as there appears to be no immediate danger. —♦ [united pkkss association.] "Wellington, December 20.
