Arrived, this morning, the Pacific Mail steamship Australia, from San Francisco, via Auckland. At a fiie which occurred to-day at Narrabri, in the north of this colony, three persons lost their lives. The damage to proporty by the fire is estimated at £BOOO. (Received December 22, 12.31 p.m.) December 22. Arrived, this morning, the Manapour i, from Auckland. A patient at the quarantine station, named Casey, has died of small-pox. No fresh match lias yet been arranged between Beach and Clifford in place of the one which was fixed for the 19th February next, but which fell through owing to Beach forfeiting by mistake. Hobart, December 22. Arrived, on Saturday, Shaw, Savill and Co. (Albion Company's) steamship Arawa, en route to New Zealand. Melbourne, December 22. Murray Smith, Agent-General in London, telegraphs to the Government that he has seen Sir Robert Herbert, Permanent Secretary to the Colonial Office, and that that official doubts the reported German annexation of the northern portion of New Guinea and the islands of New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, and the Admiralty Group. Smith adds that the German Embassy in London denies the truth of the information received to that effect.
