(Received September 6, 0.55 a.m.) Sydney, September 5. All the small-pox patients are progrossing favorably. The Union steamship Wakatipu arrived from Wellington yesterday. The Union steamship Manapouri sailed yesterday afternoon for Auckland. (Received September 6, 1 p.m.) September 6. Professor Liversidge, of the Sydney University, states that a telegram sent to the meeting of the British Association at Montreal was to the following effect :—Caldwell finds that the monotreme of the mammals of Australia are oviparous, but that their ovum is meroblastic or only partially germinal. Melbourne, September 5. The Union Company’s steamship Waihora, arrived this morning from the Bluff. (Received September 6, 1.30 p.m.) September 5. Mr Service, Premier, has telegraphed to the Agent-General in London urging the necessity of an expedition for the annexation of New Guinea, in view of the colonising activity now manifest on the part of Germany and Austria. Letters which have been received here from the passengers by the steamship Lusitania, which left on the 25th July for London state that a fire broke out on board shortly before the vessel reached Diego Garcia. It is understood that the charcoal around the refrigerator ignited. The fire, however, was extinguished in a few hours, and no serious damage was caused.
