[united press association.] Christchurch, July 1. On Saturday a tall elderly man, unknown in the district, was run over by the train on the Waikari and killed on the spot. At the inquest no blame was attached to the engine driver. Wellington, July 1. The Government have received information by the 'Frisco mail to the effect that the American Congress have passed a Bill granting assistance to various steam services, including the San Francisco mail service, but that the vote will not take effect until the end of April next. What amount it is decided to subsidise the San Francisco mail service is not known, but it is believed to be of a substantial nature. Auckland, July 1. A squall struck a sailing boat in the harbor to-day, and the only occupant, Richard George, aged 19, was drowned. Phillip Ford, aged 16, son of Ford, baker, shot himself accidentally while bird shooting at the North Shore.
