' ' ' OPENING OP THE TASMANIAN PARLIAMENT. (Received July 1, 2.25 p.m.) Melbourne, July 1. Four Australian Governments havin<> agreed to share in the expenses attaching to the extension of British rule in the Pacific, Mr Service has telegraphed to the Agent-General in London stating that the required amount of £15,000 is guaranteed by the colonies. (Received July 1, 10.5 p.m.) Five of the Australian Colonies, and not four as stated in this morning's telegram, have signified their willingness to contribute towards the cost of maintaining an extension of British rale in the Western Pacific. (Received July 1, 2.25 p.m.) The Victorian revenue for the last quarter amounted to £1,510,000, being an increase of £156,000 as compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. The revenue for the year ended 30th June amounted to £5,930,000, an increase of .2332,000 as compared with the previous year. The railway receipts increased £256,000. The Excise revenue decreased £91,000, owing to the readjustment of the stamp duties.

The question of religious instruction in State Schools isnow seriously occupying the attention of the New South Wales Government. Hobart, July 1. The revenue for the vear ended June 30 amounted -£560,000, the largest ever received. (Received June 2, 12.40 p.m.) July 2. The Tasmaniau Parliament wes opened yesterday. The Governor's speech on. the occasion announced that among the measures to be proposed would be one providing for the appointment of an Australian Federal Council. Adelaide, July 2. The South Australian revenue for last year amounted to £2,910,000, bein* a decrease of £85,000 as compared with the previous year. The Customs receipts decreased during the twelve months by £103,000 and the land revenue by £75,000. In the House of Assembly last night the Hon. J. Colton, Premier and Colonial Treasurer, made a statement, in which he announced that the Budget shows a deficit of £393,000, aud that it was the intention of Government to propose an imposition on the land tax and income tax.
