BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening last; present—His Worship the Mayor (D. Hannan, Esq.), Councillors Nicholson, Ziegler, Burger, Rudkin, and Davies. After the minutes of the previous ordinary meeting had been read and confirmed, the Council adjourned till Monday afternoon at three o'clock. The same councillors were present. The outward correspondence was read and approved of; and the inward received and considered. In consideration of a letter from a burgess calling the attention of the Council to the number of goats wandering about in the borough and main streets of the town, it was resolved that the Borough Inspector be written to calling his attention to the nuisance. A letter was read from the Hon. Secretary Local School Committee (A. C. Campbell, Esq.) requesting the patronage of the Council at an entertainment to be given on the 10th (since altered to the 24th) July, in aid of the school fund for procuring fuel and requisites.—A motion that the request be complied with was made, but afterwards withdrawn, the majority present being of opinion that the patronage of the Council was unnecessary. A letter from Messrs Aitken, Wilson, and Co., applying for payment for fire engine, less the cost of wrenches, was held over till the Finance Committee's report was considered.. Mr S. S. Pollock applied for the remission of rates due on section 80, Main street, on which the Masonic Hotel formerly stood, that buildin» having been burned down.—On the motion of Cr. Rudkin, seconded by Or. Nicholson, the amount was reduced to £3. Mr Win. Close, Secretary to the Volunteer Fire Brigade, wrote applying for the hiilf-yearly subsidy to" the Brigade. conded by Cr. Ziegler, the amount was voted, subject to the report of the Finance Committee being considered. A letter from Mr Gukert, applying for a few loads of gravel in front of his house in Main street west was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. A report from the Inspector of Nuisances was read and received. A report from the Public Works Committee was received and considered, as follows : Present Councillors Rudkin and Home. The Committee having visited the site of the track asked for by the residents of Dunedin Flat, beg to recommend—1. That a gravelled track 4ft. wide be made from Blake's Tramway to the State School entrance in Fifth street, as it is considered that by making, the track above-mentioned it would afford accommodation to the largest majority of the population resident in Dunedin Flat and Upper Seddon street, more so than by making the track via Third street. .. 2. Also, that immediate steps be taken to erect a tank for fire purposes at the upper end of Seddon street. 3. Also,' that the Council be recommended to authorise the Chairman of this Committee to get the worst places in Seddon street west repaired. Geo. Robt. Rudkin, Chairman. Kumara, June 25, 1884. On the motion of Cr. Rudkin seconded by Cr. Nicholson, the report was received and considered. Clause 1 was approved of and adopted, and specifications for the work ordered to be prepared. The consideration of clause 2 was held over until the tank in Main street is thoroughly tested. Clause 3 was adopted, and the Chairman Public Works Committee authorised to get the road repaired; cost not to exceed £5. The report as amended was then adopted. The Town Clerk then read the Finance Committee's Pieport, as follows : Present—Councillors Nicholson, Rudkin, and Home. Resolved—That the following accounts be recommended for payment:— £ s. d. J. On the motion of the Mayor seconded by Cr Nicholson Mr Orams was allowed an extra £1 for lighting at the tank in " Main street; and the Finance Committee's Report was amended to that amount, and the sum of £324 2s 5d passed for payment. This included payment "for the fire engine and the licensing accounts. The Mayor, by leave, moved " That the Mayor and Chairman of the Finance Committee be empowered to interview the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand re making arrangements for carrying on the borough during the next financial year." The motion was carried. The Mayor moved " That a letter be written to Mr Joseph Dove, late Borough Treasurer, and signed by the Mayor and Town Clerk, expressive of the satisfaction of this Council with the manner in which he carried out his duties while holding the position of Treasurer." The motion was seconded by Cr. Nicholson, and carried. This terminated the business of the Council.
