PROVINCIAL NEWS

[united press association.] Dunedin, June 9. At the inquest on the child Sterling the evidence of the mother was that she gave the child to her six-year old daughter to nurse, and she weut out and cleaned up the shed in the back yard. On her return after an abseuce of ten minutes she found the baby's clothes on fire and nearly all burnt. She dressed the child's burns, but medical advice was not obtained. The jury returned an open verdict, and, acting on their recommendation, the coroner censured the mother for her inhuman unmotherly conduct, informing her that had there been much more evidence there would probably have been a verdict of manslaughter against her. Auckland, June 9. The young man named Terry, supposed to have been devoured at Wairoa South by wild pigs, has been found on the road in apparently a dying condition. It is believed that he was thrown from his horse.
