Court to-day Hugh Jones, late manager of the Great Republic Gold Mining Company, was committed for trial to the Supreme Court, Nelson, for embezzlement of £& lis 6d, and other sums, the property of the Company. There are eight other charges yet to be beard. The deficiency amounts to a consider- i able sum. Nelson, June 2. A fire broke out in the Btables of M'Gee's Nelson Hotel last night. When discovered it had such a firm hold that it was found impossible to save three horses in the stables—one belonging to M'Gee, another, a thoroughbred, to Bevan, of Cable Bay, and a third to Mr Harley. A quantity of furniture and stores kept in the stables was totally destroyed. The only insurance was on the buildings for £IOO in the South British. The origin of the fire was unknown. Auckland, June 2. A young man named John Thomas Jerrie, travelling in South Wairoa district, on In's way to market, was attacked and devoured by wild pigs. His blood, clothes, and hair were all the traces that were found.
