LOCAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Kuraara School Committee was held last evening ; present—Mr Seddon (Chairman), Mr F. Barrowmnn and Mr Campbell (Hod. Sec). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

A copy of Mr Steward's (M.H.R. for Waimate) School Committees Election Bill, brought before the House of Kepresentatives during the last session, was submitted, and the Secretary, was authorised to sign the petition in favour of its being introduced during the session of 1884.

A letter was read from J. Hislop, Esq., Government Secretary for Education, dated 21st ult., stating that—" If Misses Ingall and Hosking's appointments'are in place of other teachers, and involve no additional school staff expense, there is no objection, provided they be snbjecfc to confirmation by authority that may be constituted by Parliament; but if these are additional appointments to those held in December, and involve addition to staff cost, Government [? will not] sanction them, whatever the regulations now in abeyance may say."

It was resolved that Mr Hislop be informed, in reply, that the appointments referred to will not involve any additional school staff expense, but will actually be less than formerly. The following letter from W. Duncan, Esq., Hokitika, was read : To the Chairman Kumara School Committee. Sir—ln February last a large public meeting was held in the Town Hall here, under the presidency of his Worship the Mayor, for the purpose of taking steps to recoup Messrs Jack and Rae for the expenses incurred by them in endeavouring to get Westland represented on the Board of Education, and also to refund them the costs of their efforts to get a Separation Act passed dividing the Educational Districts.

At this meeting a Committee was nominated, and at their first meeting it was resolved that a letter be addressed to the Chairman of eaeh School Committee asking the co-operation of the several committees in Westland, with the view of getting the public to subscribe in their respective districts.

The total expenses amount to £l4O, and the meeting, as well as the committee, considered that the public of Westland would not permit Messrs Jack and Rae to lose this money expended for a public purpose in which the whole of Westland was interested; but that by a united effort in the different centres of population by small and general subscriptions the amount would be made up and refunded to them.

Feeling confident that you will assist us xn this matter, I respectfully beg to enclose a list, and trust you may be able to return it in a short time, if possible in within say a month from now. His Worship the Mayor and myself are appointed joint treasurers. I am, Sir, Tour obedient servant, Wm. Duncan, . Hon. Sec. to Committee. Hokitika, May 20, 1884. It was resolved that the matter referred to in Mr Duncan's letter be laid before the public. It was resolved that a special meeting of the Committee be held on Monday, the 9th June, at 8 p.m., for the purpose of making arrangements to get up an entertainment for procuring school requisites, fuel, &c, for the Kumara School, and that the members of the Institute Committee be requested to attend on that evening to give their assistance.

Authority was given to the Secretary to get the school windows glazed, and to have the ground at the school gates put in order.

Leave of absence for three months was granted to Mr Seddon, Chairman, while attending Parliament at Wellington. °

The -Secretary reported having received the sum of £3 2s from Mr Woodward, this amount having been collected by him as school fees for procuring fuel, &c, from the • children attending school.

The meeting then adjourned till Monday, the 9th June.
