PROVINCIAL NEWS.

[united press association.] Wellington, May 20. At the inquest on the body of Jane Pike, drowned at the Upper Hutt, a verdict of “ found drowned ” was returned. The young man named George Purdie, who recently received injuries by a kick from a horse, died at the hospital last night. The natives who assembled at Parihaka for the usual monthly meeting have quietly dispersed to their various homes. Dunedin, May 20. A telegram in the Herald says—“ At four o’clock this morning the Kaitangata coal mine was discovered to be again on fire. This time it is feared that the conflagration is of a most serious character, bat at present it is impossible to ascertain either the exact location or the extent of the fire. It is known, however, that the portion of the mine in which an engine has lately been erected is burning, and it is supposed that the heating of the engine chimney is the canse of the fire. The pits are all closed up, and work is entirely suspended, while not a truck load of coal is at present available for delivery.” Christchurch, May 19. About a week ago a man bought sixpence worth of beer in a gin bottle. He became violently sick after drinking the beer, and has been ill ever since. Dr. Townsend had the bottle examined, and oxalic acid was found in it. The bottle had been an empty one, and picked up by a bottler’s carter.
