Telegrams from Havanuab, the capital of Cuba, state that a terrible catastrophe has occurred there. The powder magazine at the Arsenal exploded, and the shock also caused a gasometer in the neighborhood to be blown up. Immense damage was done to the adjoining buildings, and a number of persons in the vicinity lost their lives. At the Newmarket First Sprint Meeting to-day, the race for the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes, resulted as follows: Scot Free 1 St. Medard 2 Harvester ... ... 3 (Received May 2, 1 a.m.) May 1. The French Government has definitely notified its acceptance of the proposal, that the Conference on State affairs in Egypt should be held, but without waiving the demand that the whole Egyptian question shall be open for discussion. The marriage of Prince Louis, of BatteDberg, with Princess Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt, was celebrated yesterday at Darmstadt, with great ceremony. Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the German Crown Prince and Princess were present. The Queen did not attend the banquet which followed, on account of the death of the Duke of Albany. Sir H. B. Loch, the newly-appointed Governor of Victoria, has decided to sail ou the 34th inst.
Arrangements have been made with the Australian cricketers for a match at Birmingham on the 26th inst. and following days. (Received May 2, 10.15 a.m.) In the House of Commons last night a Bill to Legalise the Cremation of Dead Bodies was rejected after a debate. (Received May 2, 2.30 p.m.) A man named M'Donnell, who is known to be the Centre of the present Fenian organisation, has been arrested at Wednesbury, in Staffordshire. (Received May 2, 1 a.m.) Cairo, April 30. Despatches have been received from the Governor of Berber, stating that he still retains command of the town with a small garrison, but that assistance is immediately and urgently needed. (Received May 2, 10.50 a.m.) Toronto (Canada), April 30. A plot to destroy the Parliament buildings in this city has been frustrated. Several powerful dynamite cartridges, with fuses attached ready for firing, were discovered this evening in the basement of the building, and promptly destroyed. The affair caused iutense excitement here. No clue to the guilty parties has yet been obtained.
