[united press association.] Wellington, May 1. A new scale of fees under the Resident Magistrate's Act, and also under the Licensing Act, appears in to-night's Gazette. A private telegram received here, states that the Hon. Mr Rolleston, who is traveling overland from Canterbury to Blenheim, narrowly escaped drowning in the Wairau river. The party, it is stated, were fording the river in a buggy, which capsized, and Mr Rolleston had great difficulty in reaching the river bank. Timaru, May 1. John Walter Garland, licensee of the Arawhenua Hotel, near Temuka, shot his wife in the bedroom at 6.30 a.m. to-day, and then shot himself. Garlaud died instantaneously, and when the matter was reported to the police Mis Garland was dying. Jealousy is reported to be the cause of the terrible deed. Full particulars are not to hand. The inquest will be held to-morrow. Auckland, May 1. Pat Moran, an old pensioner, who had been committed to gaol for vagrancy on the 28th April, died this morning in the gaol. Three of his ribs were discovered to be broken, and it is alleged that Moran stated before his death that the injuries received were the result of an accident. An inquest is to be held. Gisborne, May 1. The brig Rio Graud has been driven well up on the beach, and is likely to become a total wreck. The crew landed safely. 160 tons of coal on board are insured in the New Zealand office; and the brig is insured in Sydney, where the owner resides.
