WEST COAST RAILWAY.
The Wellington correspondent of the Christchnrch Press, writing on the 14th inst., reports:— Mr T. 0. Kelsey, as promoter of a Company for the construction of the Canterbury West Coast Railway, bad an interview with the Government yesterday and to-day, leaving Wellington by this afternoon's steamer. His object was mainly to ascertain what amount, and the character of assistance which might be obtained from the Governunder provisions of the Railway Construction and Land Act, towards the construction of a railway across the South Island by a private company. He was requested to formulate the views of the company in a specific shape and place them in writing, when the matter would receive the careful consideration of the Cabinet. Instructions have been given to ascertaiu what area of land would be available under the Act, also its quality and character. This information will be obtained as soon as possible. I understand Ministers are desirous of affording every practicable assistance to the undertaking that the law will allow, if the scheme assumes a definite workable shape.
