As a first step towards Civil Service retrenchment, the Government have finally determined to abolish the Colonial Architect's Department, and to-day a month's notice was given to seven out of the eight officers employed in the department. Thomas Maddigan, tollbar keeper at Kaiwarra, has uiet with a serious accident. He was standing on the railwayline, watching the train pass, and thought he was clear, but the cowcatcher caught and threw hira some six feeb in the air, his thigh being smashed and head badly cut; but ifc is cot thought that he is fatally injured.
