[REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. REPRESENTATION OP EAST SYDNEY. THE STEAMBOAT COLLISION. AUSTRALIAN CUP. (Received February 29, 10 p.m.) Sydney, February 29. The election to the seat in the representation of East Sydney, rendered vacant by the resignation of the Hon. G. H. Eeid, Minister of Education, took place to-day. The retiring member was opposed by Mr Burdekin, who was returned at the head of the poll by a majority of 40 votes. Melbourne, February 29. It has transpired that the Merchant Shipping and Tinder writers’ Association wrote to the Victorian Navigation Board calling attention to the race which is alleged to have taken place in Port Philip between the steamships Adelaide and Wairarapa. The Board replied stating that it had decided to take steps to hold an inquiry into the collision which occurred between the two vessels. The reply, however’, states that the Board has no power to prevent racing. (Received March 1, 0.50 a.m.) February 28. The following is the latest betting on the Australian Cop Morpeth, 7to 1.
