(Received January 11, 0.55 a.m.) London, January 9. The Homeward mails via Naples, per Orient steamship Sorata, from Melbourne December Ist, were delivered here to-day. January 10. It is believed that the Transvaal Government will reject the proposed modification of the frontier line which is proposed to be made in order that native chiefs friendly to England may be afforded British protection. St. Petersburg, January 9. Forty students have been arrested at Moscow on charges of complicity in the murder of Colouel Sudeiken, of the Russian gendarmerie. Calcutta, January 9. Up to the present time, the Exhibition has bee a visited by 268,000 persons. Various satisfactory sales have been effected, and the juries have commenced the work of allotting awards.

London, January 6. The captain and crew of the steamer Duke of Westminster, which ran ashore at the Isle o£ "Wight, have abandoned the vessel. Several tugs are still at the wreck, and it is hoped that the larger portion of the cargo may be removed if the weather moderates. Thousands of spectators have been on a visit to the scene of the disaster.
