(Received January 11, 0.55 a.m.) Melbourne, January 10. Quarantine has been established here against vessels arriving from the Mauritius, where an outbreak of small-pox has occurred. The Marquis of Bute is a passenger for Australia by the steamship Orient, which left Plymouth on December Ist. The principal damage done by the 6re at the Apollo Candleworks was in two of the still-rooms, both of which were completely gutted. The loss is estimated at £12,500. The insurance amounts to £40,000, divided among twenty companies. (Received January 11, 12.30 p.m.) Sydney, January 11. Sailed, yesterday afternooon, the Ringarooma, for Auckland. Brisbane, January 11. The Hon. Mr Griffiths, Premier, has made a statement of the policy of Government. He announces that notice has been given to terminate the present contract with the Biitish India Steam Navigation Company for the direct service with Queensland ; and that in future immigration will be limited to one thousand monthly. It has been decided to mako a change in the AgentGeneralship. The poll-tax on Chinese will be increased, and the number allowed to arrive will be restricted.
