INTELLIGENCE. + [REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. DUKE OF WESTMINSTER STEAMER ASHORE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT. PASSENGERS LANDED IN SAFETY. THE EGYPTIAN TROUBLE IN SOUDAN. APPLICATION FOR ASSISTANCE FROM ENGLAND. (Received January 5, 3.20 p.m., and at Kumara at 4.40 p.m.) London, January 4. News has been received that the British India Steam Navigation Company’s steamship Duke of Westminster, 2327 tons, from Brisbane (November 6), run ashore at the Isle of Wight, and is in a critical position. All the passengers have been landed in safety. Tugs have gone to the vessel’s assistance. A note has been addressed by the Egyptian Government to the British Foreign Minister, in which a demand is made for England’s assistance in Soudan. The note states that unless this be accorded, the Egyptian Government will be compelled to relinquish to Turkey the Eastern portion of Soudan, and concentrate its troops in Egypt proper, and thus be able to dispense with the British army of occupation.
